Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Water (as needed)
- 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
- 1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup finely chopped bell peppers (any color)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped mushrooms (optional)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
- 2 green chilies (finely chopped, adjust to taste)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or regular oil)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 green onions (chopped, optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add the oil and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add water, kneading until you have a smooth, elastic dough. It should be soft but not sticky.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to roll out.
Prepare the Filling
Heat sesame oil (or regular oil) in a pan over medium heat.
Sauté ginger, garlic, and green chilies until fragrant.
Add the chopped vegetables and cook until tender and any excess moisture has evaporated (about 5-7 minutes).
Stir in soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
Allow the filling to cool down before using.
Assemble the Momos
Divide the rested dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle, roughly 3-4 inches in diameter.
Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each circle.
Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges to seal tightly. You can also pleat the edges for a traditional momo look.
Ensure that the dumplings are well sealed to avoid any leakage during steaming.
Steam the Momos
Prepare a steamer by lining the steaming rack with parchment paper or lightly oiling it to prevent sticking.
Arrange the momos in the steamer, making sure they don’t touch each other.
Steam the momos for about 10-12 minutes, or until the dough is cooked through and the filling is hot.
Enjoy your hot momos with a spicy dipping sauce or chutney. For a spicy twist, try a sauce made with soy sauce, a splash of vinegar, and a bit of chili sauce.
